    Dec 2011 Peer-reviewed papers on leadership at the 13th General Assembly of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) in Rabat, Morocco. I was also a discussant at General Assembly of CODESRIA. 
    2010 Seminar discussion with the Unisa College of Law, based on my research on the Chagos Question as an Unresolved Matter of International Law.

    Oct 2006 Paper at a seminar on Indigenous People in Africa hosted by the Institute for African Renaissance Studies (IARS), University of South Africa, Pretoria. 
    Sept 2006 Paper at an international conference entitled Land, Memory, Reconstruction and Justice: Perspectives on Land Restitution in South Africa, Cape Town, South Africa
    June 2006 Research visit to Mauritius to meet Olivier Bancoult, President of the Chagos Refugees Group (CRG), and other Chagossians displaced in Mauritius.  I visited Chagossians displaced in Seychelles in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2006. This included meetings the President of the Chagos Social Group (Seychelles) and being hosted by the Prosper family who were displaced from the Chagos Islands where Mr Willis Prosper was an administrator and Mrs Prosper was the midwife. I undertook research at the Seychelles National Archives and held meetings with an official in the Seychelles Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

    Visiting scholar at the John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Illinois and the Florida International University, Miami, Florida.
    Presented a paper at a seminar entitled: ‘Thinking about Bases: Impact of US Military Bases on Local Communities’ hosted by the Graduate Centre, City University of New York, New York.
    Participated in a seminar by Jonathan Weisgall, long-time lawyer of the people of the Republic of the Marshall Islands in claims and lawsuits before the Nuclear Claims Tribunal and US courts, hosted by the Washington College of Law, American University in Washington 
    Olivier Bancoult, Dr David Vine and I visited the US Capitol Building in Washington DC and held meetings with staffers of the US Congressional Black Caucus, staffers of the late Senator Ed Kennedy and staffers of the Human Rights Committee of the US Congress.

    June 2005

    Coordinated the Official Visit to South Africa by the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of Indigenous People, Prof Rodolfo Stavenhagen from Mexico.
    Co-hosted a seminar at Unisa on indigenous people as part of the local programme of the UN Special Rapporteur

    July 2005 Served as Head of the Secretariat at the Land Summit, a meeting of all land stakeholders in South Africa hosted by the Government of South Africa; and co-authored the report on the Land Summit.
    Nov 2003 Presented paper at the UN Expert Seminar on Indigenous People and the Administration of Justice, 14 – 16 November 2003, Madrid, Spain. The seminar was co-hosted by the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN OHCHR) and the National Long Distance University in Madrid, Spain. The UN Special Rapporteur on Indigenous Issues delivered the key-note address.
    Sept 2003 Hosted by the International Working Group on International Affairs (IWGIA) in Copenhagen, Denmark, to undertake research on the forcible removal of the Inuit people to make way for the US military base in Thule, Greenland.
    Aug 2003 Participated in seminars on human rights at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Lund University, Sweden.
    May 2002 Member of the official mission delegation of the International Bar Association (IBA) – the international professional organization for lawyers- to Malawi  to investigate threat to the rule of law following attempts by the ruling United Democratic Front to amend the Constitution of Malawi to allow then State President Bakilli Muludzi to stand for the third term. The IBA visit followed that of the International Commission of Jurist. The Constitution of Malawi was not amended in the end and a new President was elected.

    Presented an ‘intervention’ regarding the forcible removal of the San people from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana at the 34th Ordinary Session of the ACHPR in Pretoria, South Africa

    Aug 2001 Supervised LLM students from the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria who served as interns in the Secretariat at the United Nations World Congress against Racism in Durban, South Africa. 
    May 2001 Paper on the Question of the Chagos Archipelago now called British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) at the Lawyers Reference Group on Aboriginal Title at Robben Island, Cape Town, South Africa, co-hosted by the Legal Resources Centre, South Africa and the First Peoples Worldwide, Canada.
    April 2001 Supervised LLM students of the Centre or Human Rights,  University of Pretoria  from 20 African countries on an excursion to the UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha, Tanzania.  We met then President of the ICTR, Judge Navie Pillay who is the current UN Human Rights Commissioner. We also met lawyers and staff in the Office of the Prosecutor and lawyers for the defence.  
    Jan/Feb 2001 Presented 2 papers on Economic Social and Cultural Rights (ESCRs) at the first World Social Forum, in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande du Sul, Brazil.
    Jan 2001 Part of the Secretariat at the Africa NGO preparatory workshop for the UN World Conference against Racism, Gaborone, Botswana, co-hosted by the Centre for Human Rights and the UN OHCHR.
